Anthropology in/of Southeast Asian hinterlands, with a focus on cultural dynamics and the question of agency. Sports festivals, culture preservation/presentation, the state, mimesis, the reconfiguration of society and culture in war and exile. Modernity and the question whether it is a refraction of the state (for a few millenia, then).
